Backgrounder: Major events in Sino-Laotian ties

    BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao pays an official visit to Laos on Nov. 28-30 and attends a series of summit meetings in Laos' capital Vientiane.

    The following is a chronology of major events in Sino-Laotian relations:

¡¡¡¡China established diplomatic relations with Laos on April 25, 1961, but bilateral ties began to deteriorate in 1978 and had not been normalized until 1989.

    In December 1990: Chinese Premier Li Peng visits Laos.

    In October 1991: Laos' Prime Minister Khamtay Siphandone visitsChina.

    April 26-May 3, 1992: Laotian President Kaysone Phomvihane visits China.

    Dec. 3-7, 1993: Laos' Prime Minister Khamtay Siphandone visits China.

    Jan. 24-31, 1999: Laos' Prime Minister Sisavat Keobounphan visits China.

    Nov. 11-13, 2000: Chinese President Jiang Zemin pays a visit toLaos as the first ever Chinese head of state visiting the country.In a joint declaration the two countries pledge to develop a long-term, stable, good-neighborly, friendly and mutually trust relationship.

    Feb. 3-7, 2002: Laos' Prime Minister Boungnang Vorachit visits China. The two countries sign five documents on extradition and economic cooperation.

    China and Laos have seen a significant year-on-year rise in thebilateral trade, which reached 61.87 million US dollars in 2001, surging 54.1 percent year-on-year. Enditem
