Chirac urges multilateralism for fairer international order

LONDON, Nov. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Visiting French President Jacques Chirac said here on Thursday that only by recognizing a multipolar world could a sounder and fairer international order be built.

"It is by recognizing the new reality of a multipolar and interdependent world that we will succeed in building a sounder and fairer international order," Chirac said in a speech in central London.

"This is why we must work together to revive multilateralism, amultilateralism based on a reformed and strengthened United Nations," Chirac added.

"Granted, it is still possible to organize the world based on alogic of power. Yet experience has taught us that this type of organization is, by its very definition, unstable and sooner or later leads to crisis or conflict," said Chirac, who earlier held talks with British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the annual Anglo-Franco summit.

Chirac's two-day visit to London was also aimed at marking the 100 anniversary of the Entente Cordiale that ended centuries of rivalry between France and Britain. Enditem
