BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhuanet) -- Ecuador's 1-0 win over Brazil has ended the world champions' unbeaten run in the region's World Cup qualifying competition.

Mexican-based midfielder Edison Mendez hit the winner with a low drive from the edge of the penalty area in the 77th minute.

The world champions, whose players arrived at the pitch from Europe less than 48 hours before kick-off, suffered from a combination of fatigue and the high altitude of Quito at 2800 metres above sea level.

But they still had the better of the game until Mendez struck to give Ecuador a repeat of their historic win in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers at the same venue.
