CANBERRA, Nov. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- An Australian biotech company announced Monday that it is to release the embryonic stem cell line it has developed to world researchers for free.
The Stem Cell Sciences Ltd. (SCS) made the announcement when opening a new laboratory at Monash University's Clayton Campus in Melbourne, capital of Victoria state.
SCS Chief Executive Peter Mountford said there would be unfettered access to the stem cell line, named as Mel 1, for thosewilling to offer the same in return.
"It really is not appropriate that something that has been donated for the good of mankind be controlled by any individual," he said.
Victorian Treasurer and Minister for Innovation John Brumby said the company's move will further cement Melbourne's place as aworld leader in stem cell research.
"Through the use of the laboratories in the US, Europe and Asia,Mel 1 will really serve, if you like, as an ambassador to the Victorian and Australian biotech sector," he said. Enditem
