WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- US President George W. Bush on Wednesday
expressed condolences over Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's death.
"The death of Yasser Arafat is a significant moment in Palestinian history. We express our condolences to the Palestinian people," Bush said in a statement.
"For the Palestinian people, we hope that the future will bringpeace and
the fulfillment of their aspirations for an independent, democratic Palestine
that is at peace with its neighbors. During the period of transition that is
ahead, we urge all in the region and throughout the world to join in helping
make progress toward these goals and toward the ultimate goal of peace," Bush
said.
Earlier Wednesday, Bush said a new Palestinian leadership wouldimprove
chances for the Middle East peace process. Bush has refused to deal with Arafat
during the past two years, accusing the Palestinian leader of being undemocratic
and failing to tackleterror.
According to a CNN report, the US representation at Arafat's funeral in
Cairo may not be as high as the Palestinian side has expected and the most
likely choice may be US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs
William Burns.
The 75-year-old Arafat died in a French military hospital at 3:30 am
(0230GMT) local time on Thursday. Enditem
