DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Global Fund, which initiatesthe fight
against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria worldwide, has come to Tanzania for a
close study of HIV/AIDS, which is rampant in sub-Saharan Africa.
Charles Rajabu, an information officer from the Tanzanian primeminister's office,
told Xinhua on Wednesday that the international institution would hold
its first meeting in Africa since the body's inception in 2001.
The Globe Fund meeting is slated for Nov. 18 and 19 in Arusha in northern
Tanzania.
United Nations (UN) Secretary General Kofi Annan and several heads of state
from African countries are to attend the meeting that draws more than 200
delegates.
Globe Fund was created by UN member countries to collect funds for curbing
such pandemics as HIV/AIDS in developing countries.
Out of the 42 million people who live with HIV/AIDS across the world, 28
million live in sub-Saharan Africa. Tanzania has reported almost 2 million
HIV/AIDS cases, with an annual death toll of 140,000.
A new figure released by the Tanzanian Christian
Council on Wednesday said that some 600 people die each day in the country from
AIDS or AIDS-related diseases. Enditem |
