CAIRO, Nov. 9
(Xinhuanet) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa expressed concerns
Tuesday about the ongoing military showdown between US-Iraqi forces and
insurgents in the Iraqi rebel stronghold of Fallujah.
The AL
chief said before leaving for Madrid on a visit to Spain that He was worried
about the suffering of the Iraqi civilians in Fallujah, calling on all parties
to provide full protection for them.
The best way to end
the current crisis in the western Iraqi city was to bring the parties back to
the negotiating table, he said.
Fierce battles continued in
Fallujah on Tuesday as the US-Iraqi forces penetrated the Iraqi rebel-held city,
some 50 km west of Baghdad.
The US Marines backed by the
Iraqi forces thrust into Fallujah from the northwestern Jolan district and
al-Mualemeen district in the east, said witnesses.
The major assault on Fallujah was aimed at retaking the city from insurgents' hand as part of efforts to restore security and stability to the war-torn country and pave the way for the general elections slated for January 2005. Enditem |
