Suez Canal remains closed
www.chinaview.cn 2004-11-09 10:01:33

BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The Suez Canal remains closed after desperate attempts to move a broken-down oil tanker ended in failure.

The situation remains chaotic two days after the Liberian ship became disabled as it was passing along the canal.

Some 60 ships have been stranded in the canal and all traffic on the waterway has been brought to a standstill.

The closure of the canal could prove costly for Egypt, which depends heavily on canal revenues as one of its major sources of foreign exchange.

Some 15,000 ships passed through the 190-km waterway last year, bringing Egypt 2.6 billion US dollars in revenues.
