Compromise concluded over Iranian nuclear issue

PARIS, Nov. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- European and Iranian negotiators concluded a "preliminary accord" over Iranian nuclear issue during a meeting held Friday and Saturday in Paris to avoid bringing the matter before the UN Security Council.

Iran's supreme leader Seyed Ali Khamenei reiterated Friday that his country is not intended to seek any military use of nuclear technology. Khamenei said this during a speech at Teheran University on Nov. 5, 2004. "We strongly believe that a solid and strong nation and government relying on a huge pious youth power is basically needless of nuclear weapons," Khamenei said. Tehran has been denying the US accusation of developing nuclear weapons, asserting that the accusation was politically motivated. (Xinhua/AFP photo)

The text of the preliminary accord will be handed over to the four negotiating countries (Iran, Germany, France and Britain) and will be officially released after getting approval by the four capitals, French RFI television quoted an Iranian negotiator as saying on Sunday.

The three European countries, representing the 25-member Europe Union (EU), had hoped to persuade Iran to cease its activities related to uranium enrichment in exchange for a nuclear cooperation with the EU.

The United States threatened that the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will decide in a meeting in Vienna on Nov. 25 on whether to take Iran before the UN Security Council, if Iran does not give up the enrichment.

The Paris meeting is in the framework of a diplomatic process aiming at finding a solution with Iran before the meeting on Nov. 25. Enditem
