NAIROBI, Oct. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC),arrived here Friday to kick off an official good-will visit to Kenya, with an aim to
promote bilateral ties.
It is the first visit to Africa by China's top legislator since the
country's new leadership took office.
Wu was accorded a warm welcome by Speaker of the National Assembly of
Kenya Francis Ole Kaparo when he arrived at the airport in Nairobi, Kenya's
capital.
Wu said in a written statement upon his arrival that "China highly
values the relationship with African countries that include Kenya." His current
four-nation African tour is aimed at deepening mutual understanding, promoting
traditional friendship and expanding cooperation of mutual benefits, he said.
He stated although China and Kenya are far apart, they have a long
history of friendly exchanges. Since diplomatic relations were forged 41 years
ago, thanks to joint efforts, the two countries have continuously expanded
exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy and culture, and acted in close
coordination and supported each other in international affairs, which has played
an important role in safeguarding the rights and interests of both countries and
those of developing nations.
During his three-day visit in Kenya, Wu is scheduled to exchange
extensive views with Kenyan leaders on bilateral relations and other issues of
common concern. "I believe with joint efforts, this visit would serve to further
the overall and deepened development of bilateral friendly and cooperative
relations," said Wu.
He said Kenya is a country of great influence in Africa. In recent
years, he said, the Kenyan government, under the leadership of President Mwai
Kibaki, has given great impetus to its economic and social reform, and achieved
remarkable success. Kenya, with stable society, growing economy and national
harmony, has become the important force to safeguard peace and stability in the
region, Wu said.
Also arriving aboard the same plane were Wu's wife Zhang Ruizhen and
vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Raidi.
Kenya is the first leg of Wu's four-nation African tour, which will
also take him to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Nigeria. Enditem |
