BAGHDAD, Oct. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- A State Department security officer was killed Sunday when insurgents launched a mortar or rocket attack on a US base near Baghdad International Airport, The US embassy said.

Ed Seitz, an agent with the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, was killed about 5 a.m. (0200 GMT) at Camp Victory, embassy spokesman Bob Callahan said.

The victim was believed to be the first American diplomat killed in Iraq since last year's US-led invasion.

An undetermined number of people were injured in the attack but none with life-threatening injuries, Callahan added. Enditem
