67 killed in Japan by typhoon

    TOKYO, Oct. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Typhoon No. 23 has killed at least 67 as of Thursday night, while leaving 21 people missing and 351 injured, Kyodo News reported based on its count.

    The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said 59 people had beenkilled by 20:00 p.m. (1100 GMT), and 22 left missing. Among the prefectures hit, western Hyogo Prefecture suffered the most with 16 killed and two missing, it said.

    The typhoon was downgraded to an extratropical depression on Thursday morning after moving into the Pacific off the Kanto region of eastern Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

    Tokage, nickname of the typhoon, is the 10th one that hit Japanthis year, a record high. It is also the most devastating one since October 1979 when 115 were killed or missing, according to the Cabinet Office. Enditem
