JAKARTA, Oct. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Indonesian Minister of Defense Juwono Sudarsono said Thursday he planned to visit the United States in the near future to have talks on US military embargo against Indonesia.
"We must continue explaining that it (the embargo) can eventually harm themselves. Indonesia can respect human rights if it is fully equipped," he told reporters shortly after being installed as minister by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at theState Palace here.
Juwono said mounting allegations in the US Congress and non-governmental organizations of right abuses by Indonesian soldiers are "unfair" and "imbalance."
"I will visit (the United States) to talk with Congress men, the secretary of defense and NGOs to explain the situation facing our soldiers," he said.
The US government has imposed arms embargo on Indonesia for alleged right abuses by Indonesian officers in East Timor during the UN-sponsored ballot for independence in 1999. Enditem
