Gaza cleans up after Israeli offensive

BEIJING, Oct. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli tanks have rolled out of Gaza after a massive 16-day offensive that killed at least 100 Palestinians. The Palestinian prime minister has condemned the operation. And a Hamas spokesman said the army pullout proves that the Palestinian resistance is stronger than ever, CCTV reported Sunday.

Palestinians picked through the rubble of dozens of homes in the sprawling Jabalya refugee camp on Saturday. Israel had just ended its most powerful assault in the Gaza Strip in four years of bloodshed.

Ahmed Qurei, Palestinian Prime Minister, said, "They (Israelis) said they finished but they left after them 140 martyrs and more then 500 people injured in addition to the destruction of demolishing houses, infrastructure, destroying the life of the people there."

Despite the destruction, the Israeli attacks have made the Palestinians more united. As a Hamas spokesperson told reporters, the army pullout proved that Palestinian resistance was stronger than ever.

Mushir Al-Masri, Hamas Spokesman, said, "This proves that the Israeli military has failed because the resistance is still strong, and today it's even stronger and even more unified than before. This is because of the methods we use to hit the Zionist enemy, and because of the will of the Palestinian people in the resistance."

More than 100 Palestinians were killed in the operation, which saw Israel send in tanks, infantry and armored bulldozers, giving bite to its pledge to hit militants hard. Palestinian officials estimate more than 100 houses were destroyed in the northern Gaza camp. They say it will take two days to arrive at a final figure.
