BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- China and Russia will take measures to develop coordination "within the framework of a multilateral nuclear export control mechanism," says a Sino-Russian joint statement signed by Chinese President Hu Jintao and Russian President Vladimir Putin here Thursday.

    The two countries will continue to coordinate to face the serious threat posed by the proliferation of weapons of massive destruction (WMD), their delivery systems and related materials.

    China and Russia welcome UN Resolution 1540, which they deem is "of great significance to the nonproliferation of WMD." The two sides agree to the strict implementation of the UN resolution and a more active role of the United Nations in nonproliferation.

    According to the statement, both countries attach importance to strengthening the international nuclear nonproliferation mechanism, pointing out that the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT), signed on July 1, 1968, is the mainstay of the mechanism.

    China and Russia hold it is crucial to successfully convene a conference to deliberate the NPT in 2005. They agree that the Comprehensive (Nuclear) Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), signed on Sept. 24,1996, should take effect as early as possible.

    China and Russia attach special importance to the coordination of the international efforts to eliminate the danger of nuclear terrorism, stressing special attention should be paid to protect nuclear objects and prevent illegal transfer of nuclear raw materials.

    The two countries give their "all-out support" to the establishment of nuclear-free zones, especially in central Asia.

    Both countries advocate for a nuclear weapons-free Korean Peninsula, and hold that the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula should be settled peacefully through dialog as early as possible, and the six-party talks are an effective way to achieve the goal.

    Both countries speak highly of the result of the third six-party talks held last June and reiterate they will continue to work for the talks and actively seek solutions that are acceptable to all parties.

    The two countries stress that the ultimate goal is to guarantee the nuclear weapons-free status on the Korean Peninsula, safeguard lasting peace, stability and security on the peninsula and the region, and promote common development. Enditem
