Sudan rejects EU pressure

KHARTOUM, Oct. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismail said Tuesday that his government would oppose the visit by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana to Sudan if it ismeant to extend more pressure on the country, the Sudanese daily Khartoum Monitor reported.

Ismail said he would deal with foreign delegations which would come for exerting pressure on Sudan as the Sudanese government rejects such a visit.

"International and military intervention on Darfur and imposing sanctions against Sudan are ruled out," said the minister. "The Sudanese government is dealing through the open-door policy without neglecting the Sudanese homeland's sovereignty and security," he added.

He affirmed that his government "supports the political settlement to the Darfur issue by working it out with the local administration".

"The United States is not in a position to impose sanctions on Sudan," said the minister.

He added that his government has been capable of besieging the US endeavor towards the escalation of Sudan, adding that this endeavor "is paralyzed".

About expanding the African Union (AU) forces, the minister said "the role of the AU comes when the disarmament of both the armed rebels and the Janjaweed militias in Darfur takes place". He added the increase of the AU forces has an external dimension besides rebuilding the affected villages in Darfur whereas the Sudanese government started that in cooperation with world organizations.

The foreign minister noted that the AU forces have been formed from neighboring countries, stressing that they would not interfere in security matters. Enditem
