UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Tuesday
appealed for calm in Cote d'Ivoire after Monday's violent demonstrations
against two UN facilities in the northern Ivorian city of Bouake.
Annan expressed concern at the deteriorating security situation in the West
African country and called on all Ivorian parties to "desist from any action
that could aggravate the situation in the country," his spokesman said in a
statement in New York.
"He expects the Ivorian authorities and political forces to exercise
restraint, to refrain from any resort to violence and to fulfill their
commitments with regard to the full and unconditional implementation of the
peace process," the statement said.
Supporters of the rebel New Forces ransacked a UN office on Monday in
Bouake. Peacekeepers with the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) were forced
to fire warning shots in the air to disperse the crowd.
Bouake is located in the northern part of Cote d'Ivoire, which has been
under the control of the New Forces since the country's civil war started in
September 2002. The country remains divided although a transitional government
was established in the country in April.
In a statement issued in the Cote d'Ivoire's capital of Abidjan, the UNOCI
said it counted on Cote d'Ivorie's security forces to ensure the protection of
UN personnel and property in the country, and reminded them of an earlier UN
resolution binding them to cooperate fully with the UNOCI. Enditem
