SHANGHAI, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- China and France will actively support multilateral actions and respect the freedom and identity of all nationalities, said French President Jacques Chirac here Monday.

Addressing students at Shanghai's elite Tongji University, Chirac said China and France, both as founding members of the United Nations, should contribute to the establishment of an international order of peace and prosperity under the UN framework, and that all UN member states must volunteer to submit to international rules and norms in the use of force.

"It is time to readjust the composition of the UN security council so as to make it better reflect the reality of the present world," Chirac said, adding the international community must play a more decisive role on the issue of preventing conflicts and safeguarding peace.

Thus, France supports China for its role in resolving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue by peaceful means, and France will encourage China to be further involved in the UN actions, said Chirac, who is here on his third visit as the French president.

He said through the dialogue between Asia and Europe, China and France are striving for a new, essential balanced situation among the "big triangle" of economic growth among the United States, Europe and Asia.

In the current multipolar world, new powerful nations are emerging, particularly in Asia. Quite a number of countries have shaken off poverty, with people's living standards being improved, Chirac acknowledged.

In the future world, characterized by a balance of political, economic and cultural impact, he said, each nation will seek more mutual benefits, equality and respect.

Chirac had exchanged views with Chinese President Hu Jintao on wide-ranging issues in Beijing Sunday, he said, citing humanity as the major subject of the French-Chinese dialogue.

Having this spirit in mind, cooperative relations between France and China will serve the future world, Chirac said. And with responsibility shared by the group and the knowledge by the public, the civilization and identity of all nationalities should be given due respect to.

President Chirac is scheduled to leave Shanghai, the third leg of his five-day China trip, for Hong Kong on Tuesday. Prior to this, he had visited Chengdu city in southwest China's Sichuan Province and the national capital Beijing. Enditem
