China, UN vow to boost cooperation

    BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan and visiting United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan pledge that China and the UN should cement cooperation to promote "the common prosperity of the world."

    Tang and Annan made the remark here Monday at a celebration event held to mark 25 anniversary of the founding of the cooperation between China and the UN organizations in China.

    Tang spoke highly of the role played by the UN organizations in China in the country's reform and opening-up process and modernization.

    Tang acknowledged that the world is undergoing major profound changes and tough tasks should be accomplished for the world development.

    China supports the UN's leading role to promote the world development and appreciates its focus on the realization of the Millennium Development Goals, Tang said, pledging China is willing to join hands with the U.N. to strengthen cooperation and promote the world common prosperity.

    Annan said the UN organizations in China has scored productive achievements in its cooperation with Chinese partners in various fields and the two sides forged strong relationship in the past 25 years.

    He vowed that the UN would continue to support China's economic and social development and was committed, along with Chinese partners, to keep enriching their cooperation and promoting the common development. Enditem
