UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The draft resolution condemning Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip is "totally one-sided" and it will not go forward, US Ambassador to the UN John Danforth said here Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters before the 15-member council's meeting ona draft resolution prepared by Algeria and Tunisia, Danforth said that if the draft were to be passed, it could be the most terriblecouncil resolution.
"Our view is that it is very important to resume the peace process that outlined the Roadmap," he said.
The political settlement for the crisis could be reached only if "the United Nations in general and the Security Council in particular take a balanced position," said the US ambassador.
"The problem with this resolution is that there is nothing balanced about it, it is totally one-sided," he said.
"I'd like to predict that it will not go forward," said the ambassador who had veto power that can kill the Arab draft even ifit got the support of all other council members.
"The resolution that is being presented to us is not the roadmap to peace. It is yet one more step on the road to nowhere,"Danforth told an open council meeting Monday night.
"It's the position of the US delegation that we should not simply pass resolution after resolution, which are all one-sided, but that we should insist again that the roadmap is the way to peace," he said.
The draft resolution condemned the "broad military incursion and attacks" by Israeli forces in the area of Northern Gaza Strip.
It reiterated calls upon Israel to abide "scrupulously" by its legal obligations and responsibilities under the Fourth Geneva Convention to protect civilians in times of conflicts.
The draft demanded immediate cessation of all military operations in the troubled area, and called on Israel to ensure the "unfettered" access and safety of UN personnel. Enditem |
