KABUL, Oct. 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Burhanuddin Rabani, once the Afghan president who now still carries sizable political sway, announced Sunday that he and several members of the party headed by him will support the incumbent president Hamid Karzai in next week's balloting.
In a meeting held recently and presented by ranking members of Islamic
Society (Jamiat-i-Islami), the transitional government's president also attended
it, Rabbani told journalists at a news conference he chaired.
"When he (Karzai) announced his support to our agenda, a numberof main
members (of Jamiat-i-Islami) announced they supported Karzai," he said.
At the meeting, Rabbani said, members exchanged views about different
issued under the name of National Agenda, which includesimplementation of
religious values, fighting administrative corruption, strengthening of national
unity, social justice and reconstruction and respect jehadi resistance.
The attendants include jehadi leaders, commanders and elders, he said.
This group is one of the most important political parties in Afghnistan that boasts popular support and is very active in the political arena in the Central Asian country. Its other prominent members include deposed Heart governor Ismael Khan and Balkh governor General Atta Mohammad. The party has not proposed any candidates so far for the elections. Enditem |
