CANBERRA, Oct. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Nearly 200 suspects have been arrested in Australia's seven states and territories in the nation's biggest assault on child pornography.

More arrests are expected after the week-long raids by the federal police and six state police agencies, The Sydney Morning Herald, one of the nation's leading newspapers, reported Friday.

Those arrested included "high-risk professions and (those) in contact with children including health-care professionals, education officials, department officials and those working withinthe education environment as well as law enforcement officers," said Mike Phelan, the federal police agent who coordinated the raids code-named Operation Auxin.

Police Commissioner of the state of New South Wales Ken Moroneyhas described the crimes against children exposed in the raids as "heinous, vile, (and) despicable."

Police said a number of photographic studios were raided, raising alarm that they might have been used in the production of child pornography. The evidence suggested the photographs had beentaken overseas.

More than 380 computers were seized containing more than 2 million pornographic images of children downloaded from websites run by a syndicate.

Australian Justice Minister Chris Ellison said he was concernedthat the pornographic syndicate had links with organized crime in eastern Europe. Enditem
