WFP pipelines 100 tons of food to storm-hit Haiti

HAVANA, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The World Food Program (WFP) has flown 100 tons of cookies into Haiti for the victims of the devastating Tropical Storm Jeanne, a WFP official announced Thursday.

Guy Gauvreau, the WFP director for Haiti, said the food, flown from Italy, arrived Thursday morning in Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, according to reports monitored here.

The WFP has supplied Haiti with over 200 tons of food for 70,000 individuals since the storm two weeks ago, according to Haiti Online. The aid was basically sent to the worst-hit city of Gonaives, some 170 km north of Port-au-Prince.

The WFP plans to distribute in the next five months over 100,000 tons of food for the country. Aid, which will be limited to the most vulnerable groups, including children and the old people, will also be provided.

Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross said last week the institution received from Panama a cargo of 5,000 blankets, 100 packages for personal hygiene and other uses. Food also arrived in Haitian territory from Panama in the past hours. Enditem
