RAMALLAH, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat called on Thursday on world leaders to immediately interfere to end the Israeli military operation in northern Gaza Strip, the official news agency of Wafa reported.
Arafat made the call in letters he has sent to the UN secretary general, British prime minister, Russian president and Holland's prime minister and chairman of the European Union, according to Wafa.
In the letters, Arafat urged the world leaders "to interfere in order to stop the Israeli massacres against our people," during which "39 Palestinians were killed within the last 24 hours in Gaza and the West Bank."
Arafat said that hundreds were injured, dozens of them are seriously injured, adding that the Israeli army is carrying out a widespread operation of destructions into the areas that it incurred in.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Palestinian leadership said that it called for an urgent session of the United Nations Security Council "to discuss the brutal massacres against our people in the Gaza Strip."
The statement said that the Palestinian leadership is making contacts with Arab and foreign countries, and had held meetings with its representatives urging them to interfere to end the Israeli offensive. Enditem
