PARIS, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- French President Jacques Chirac reiterated on Thursday that France would like to see the enforcement of the United Nations resolution 1559, which calls forthe complete withdrawal of foreign forces from Lebanon and respectfor its sovereignty.

At a face-to-face meeting with visiting Lebanese Prime MinisterRafic Hariri at his Elysee Palace, Chirac reiterated France supports Lebanon's independence, territory integrity and sovereignty, said Jerome Bonnafont, spokesman of Chirac's office.

Chirac showed again France's will to see the enforcement of theUN resolution 1559, saying that France is always with Lebanon and ready to cooperate with Lebanese government in Lebanon's interests.

Hariri said for his part at a news conference after the meetingthat France and Chirac had always been the region's friends and particularly for Lebanon.

Their meeting came shortly before UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is to brief the UN Security Council on October 3 on the implementation of Resolution 1559, which was adopted on September 2.

Resolution l559 was a clear message to Syria, which dominates political life in its neighbor and maintains around 15,000 troops on Lebanese soil.

But just one day after the adoption of the resolution, Lebanon's parliament passed a controversial Syrian-inspired change to its constitution to allow another three-year term for Lebanese President Emile Lahoud. Paris and Washington were all opposed to the change. Enditem
