RAMALLAH, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat condemned on Thursday the killing of 10 Palestinians by the Israeli army in Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza.

"What happened in the northern area of the Gaza Strip is a real crime with the full meaning of this word," Erekat told reporters in reaction to the Israeli military escalation.

He said he held an urgent meeting with European Union representatives and urged them to intervene immediately to stop the Israeli military actions.

Erekat also personally contacted representatives of the United States and Russia and urged them to help stop "the bath of blood of the Palestinian people".

An Israeli army tank fired a shell on Thursday afternoon at a crowd of Palestinians who were in Jabalya refugee camp, one of the most densely populated areas in the Gaza Strip. At least 10 people were killed on the spot.

Palestinian medics at al Awda Hospital said most of those killed were under the age of 16. Enditem
