HK late fireman lauded for bravery

    HONG KONG, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Hong Kong's late senior firemanCheung Chun-wai has been posthumously awarded the Gold Medal for Bravery for the self-sacrifice he displayed in rescuing a person who fell into a manhole in July.

    The medal will be presented by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government at the 2004 Honors and Awards Presentation Ceremony on Oct. 9.

    On July 7, a report was received that a person had fallen into a sewage drain in the car-park of Smiling Shau Kei Wan Plaza. WhenCheung arrived at the scene he volunteered to immediately enter the manhole for a snatch rescue, due to time concerns. However, hewas overcome by toxic gases and died. Enditem
