Kabul police deny helicopter crash report

KABUL, Sept. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Kabul police on Tuesday dismissed earlier reports about an Afghan military helicopter crash in west Kabul as incorrect, saying eyewitnesses misunderstood the situation on the ground.

According to the police patrolling the west suburb, three helicopters were hovering over the area on routine patrol mission Tuesday morning. One of the coppers landed on the ground, with rotors sending up dusts in the air.

Some local residents mistook it as an accident."There's a misunderstanding involved," one policeman told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"All the helicopters that carried out the mission have returned to their base safe and sound," he added.

The situation in the war-ravaged Central Asian country has been unusually tense ahead of the country's first presidential elections on Oct. 9.

Even slightest unusual development would add to the jitters among local residents, who have seen several rocket attacks in the city recently.

On Monday night, a small bomb went off in the city, causing no damage.

The former Taliban regime and its allies have vowed to disrupt the balloting with all possible means, including carrying out attacks on the 18 presidential candidates. Enditem
