ATHENS, Sept. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Four gold medals and three world records in the swimming pool featured a weekend of China while three golds from track and field events brought the country to an insurmountable lead at the 12th Paralympic Games here on Saturday.
The top three countries in the games medal standings remained unchanged, with China atop with 45 gold, 41 silver, 24 bronze medals for a total of 110.
Britain and Australia followed with medal records of 28-21-22 and 20-27-24 at the end of the eighth day's competitions in the Greek capital.
The tumble of eight world records out of 18 swimming finals made it one of the most memorable days in the September 17-28 games.
Peruvian swimmer Jimmy Eulert won his country's first medal in Athens, a silver in the men's S3 50 meters freestyle.
The show time for the Chinese began when Dong Qiming, 26, clocked one minute 22.35 seconds to take the women's S11 100m backstroke event, edging Japanese rival Rina Akiyama by 28 hundredths of a second. It was a new world and Paralympic record.
China's defending champion Zhu Hongyan collected her third gold medal, in the women's S12 100m backstroke in a new world record time of 1:08.89. Legendary American Trischa Zorn had to settle for the bronze, although the medal brought her Paralympic medal tally to 54 in eight games.
Li Peng of the men's S6 50m butterfly and Tian Rong in men's S750m butterfly wound up the Chinese "golden show".
UKrainian Viktor Smyrnov led from the start to win the men's 100m backstroke S11, and men's 100m breaststroke SB13 saw the sport's first double winners in Athens, with German Daniel Clausner and Andrey Strokin of Russia tied for the first place.
Chinese athletes continue to do a good job in track and field event, with three fresh gold medals to China's medal tally.
Wang Ting won women's Class F54/55 discus throw, and Yan Feng and Fu Xinhan finished 1-2 in men's Class F36 discus.
And Wu Chunmiao won her first Paralympic gold medal, in women's Class T11 200m race.
China has so far won 15 gold medals in athletics in the Athens games, already exceeding its harvest of 11 golds in Sydney.
Chinese athletes are expected to add more gold medals in the three days left for the sport, and, most probably, eventually take the top spot of the medal standings.
Should it be the case, it would be something really unexpected for officials of the China Paralympic Committee. Enditem |
