Former Tanzanian president proposed for posthumous Nobel award

    DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- Former Tanzanian president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere has been proposed for a posthumous Nobel prize award for his role in the liberation and development of east Africa.

    The proposal was made at a preparatory meeting for the Great Lakes regional summit slated for the coming November, according tolocal newspaper Daily News.

    Delegates at the meeting in Arusha unanimously agreed that Nyerere's contribution toward the liberation and development of Tanzania and east Africa deserves a posthumous recognition and they vowed to ensure that Nyerere is honored for his contribution.

    Nyerere was the founder of the Republic of Tanganyika in 1961 and cofounder of the United Republic of Tanzania three years laterand served as president of the united republic from 1964 to 1985. Enditem
