ATHENS, Sept. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Canada and New Zealand joined the unbeaten sides Britain and the United States in the Paralympic wheelchair rugby tournament semi-finals after their respective quarter-finals wins here on Thursday.

The United States defeated Germany 46-34 while Britain cruised to a 50-42 victory over Japan.

As expected, the Germans slowed down the game in the opening quarter, but the Americans gradually got on top to lead 20-12 at half time and then moved ahead in the third quarter to lead by 10 points.

American Bryan Kirkland braved a cut under his right eye to play a keyrole in attack and defence. He was top scorer with 14 goals.

Andre Leonhard scored 13 goals for Germany.

Britain quickly pulled away in the match against Japan with the elusive Troye Collins bagging a brace of goals in the opening moments. He went on to score 15 goals in the first half and 21 for the match.

The duel between the experienced Collins and Japanese Shinichi Shimakawa, recognized as the fastest player in the competition, was a highlight of the first and third quarters with each closely marking the other. Shimakawa finished the game with 17 goals.

New Zealand won 9-7 over Belgium and Canada downed Australia 13-11 in the two other quarter-finals later Thursday.

The New Zealanders lifted their game, when required, to win an open quarter-final against Belgium 40-33.

Canadians put pressure on the Kiwis in the final period, but two mistakes in quick succession put paid on Australia's chances. Enditem
