ATHENS, Sept. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- With four more gold medals, China widened its leading gap at the medal standings at the end of the fifth day of competition at the 12th Paralympic Games here on Wednesday.

    China remained top-ranked in the medal table, with 25 gold, 24 silver and 21 bronze for a total of 70 medals.

    Britain followed with a medal record of 18-11-14 on a tally of 43 and Australia was ranked third with 12-18-14 for a medal sum of 44.

    The Olympic Aquatic Center's swimming pool witnessed a heated men's 100 meters breaststroke SB9 final Wednesday evening, which was taken by Russian Dmitri Poline in a new world record time of one minute 11.23 seconds.

    Ros Kristin Hakonardottir from Iceland won her country's first gold medal, in the women's S7 100m backstroke, setting a world record of 1:25.56.

    Tiny American Travis Mohr beat others in the men's S8 100m backstroke in 1:10.15.

    Wheelchaired Briton Jim Anderson led from the start to win the men's 200m freestyle S2 event in 4:49.81, also a world record.

    China's most successful swimmer in Sydney Zhu Hongyan, with five gold medals, got a flying start in her gold rush by winning the women's SM12 200m individual medley in a new world record time of 2:30.09.

    And British won the men's 4X100m freestyle relay in 3:59.62 and Americans dominated the women's 4X100m relay of the same stroke, in 4:40.57.

    Chinese runner Wang Fang beat others to take the women's 100 meters T36 title, adding a ninth gold medal of the sport for China. The 21-year-old sprint to the finish line first, breaking her own world record of 14.56 seconds, with a new mark time of 13.88.

    American sprint star Amy Winters got a flying start with a new Paralympic record in the women's 100m T46, 12.50 seconds.

    Defending champion Afrah Gomdi of Tunisia shone in the women's javelin T40 final, with a new world record throw of 28.12 meters.

    Adekundo Adesoji of Nigeria beat his own world 100m T12 record by one hundredth of a second, stopping the clock in 10.75 seconds.

    Another world record fell in the men's 400m T46 with Antonio Souza of Brazil running 48.46 seconds.

    Mustapha EL Aouzari of Morocco came out a strong winner in the men's 1,500m T11 event, in 4:08.58.

    Chantal Petitclear of Canada added another gold to the one she won in the 100m on Tuesday, with a tactical victory in the women's 800m T54. Her winning time of 1:50.69 was a new Paralympic Games record.

    And Kenny Van Weeghel of the Netherlands surged ahead for the men's 400m T54 title in 47.45. Enditem
