ATHENS, Sept. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- Military security measures under the code name IFITOS applied for the Olympic Summer Games held last month here have been re-activated for the September 17-29 Paralympic Games.
The Army participation in joint security measures for the Paralympics is proportionally bigger than during the Olympic Games, when a total of 70,000 personnel, majority police officers, was mobilized.
The measures include 5,000-strong joint military and police guarding the Paralympic venues and other Olympic areas, 600-strong military guard for vital city functions like electricity and water supply, and TV broadcasting, as well as nuclear or bio-chemical attack readiness (217 persons), and a total of 14 battalions involved in Greece's land borders surveillance, jointly with the Police.
24 war-ships, three helicopter, an airplane, and three submarine catastrophe units are devoted to surveillance of the sea area, daily Ethnos reports.
Apart from the existing air-defence system, the national air-space and Athens FIR (Flight Information Region) are surveilled by 24 war-planes, one transporter plane C-130, and five air-raid missile units.
Additionally, Greek Police is strengthened by 94 military observers, three T-6 airplanes and two super-Puma search-and-rescue helicopter for dealing with the threat of tele-controlled flying objects, parachuters, and gliders.
NATO AWACS are flying 16 hours per day, while NATO STANAVFORMED(Standing Naval Forces Mediterranean) keeps patrolling, and special NATO unit for nuclear and bio-chemic war is on alert. Enditem |
