Why China always short of Paralympic shooting medals

ATHENS, Sept. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- To win or to lose is only natural in sports. However, it is a pity that Chinese shooters are always one step short of a medal in the sport at the Athens Paralympic Games.

With only two days left for shooting events, China has so far only won one gold medal, in men's P1-10m air pistol Class SH1 in her total shooting medal tally.

Chinese athletes frequently finished in the 4th or 5th place. Both Xiao Weidong and Zhang Nan got 4th places in women's R2-10m air rifle stand Class SH1 and women's R8-50m sport rifle 3x20 Class SH1, respectively.

Liu Jie was in the 5th place of the final standings of mixed R5-10m air rifle prone Class SH2 and men's P1-10m air pistol gold medallist Li Jianfei finished 4th in mixed P3-25m sport pistol Class SH1.

How could this happen? Some experts picked up psychological weakness and lack of international inexperience to blame.

According to Zhang Jin'an, Chinese shooting team manager, Chinese shooters did better in domestic competitions and their performance in training sessions are can match those of international champions.

However, as Chinese shooter Xiao Weidong said, once entering international contests, Chinese Paralympic shooters tend to get nervous and cannot do up to their form.

Secondly, the shooters lack a systematic trainings to the full length except they face any major international competition.

And, in a sociological sense, some shooters do not have a regular job to support their families.

Analysts said that if we expect better competition results for athletes with disabilities, they need comprehensive care from the society at large. Enditem
