Chinese judoca wins gold medal in Paralympics

    ATHENS, Sept. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Xue Lanmei became China's first ever Paralympic judo champion after her victory in the women's over 70kg category at the 12th Paralympic Games here on Tuesday.

    Xue, the 2003 world champion in the heavyweight (+70kg) category, upset Spain's Olmedo Maria in 25 seconds by an ippon.

    In the women's 70kg category, Spain's Carmen Herrera won her country's first gold here by defeating Hungary's world champion Sandrone Nagy.

    Ilham Zakiyev, 24, grabbed the first gold medal for Azerbaijan on the last day of the judo competitions in Athens.

    Zakiyev defeated Britain's veteran Ian Rose in the final by an ippon and became the new Paralympic champion in the men's over 100kg class.

    Meanwhile, Brazilian star Tenorio Antonio became the third Paralympic judoca to win three golds in a row.

    Antonio, winner of the 86kg category in Atlanta and in the 90kgin Sydney, beat China's Men Runming with waza-ari in the final of men's 100kg class.

    Algerian Messaoud Nine, 39, achieved a dramatic victory in the final of 90kg category, overcoming his Russian opponent Oleg Kretsul. Enditem
