HAVANA, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- At least two
people were killed astropical storm Jeanne slammed Puerto Rico with wind gusts
of 110 km per hour (kph), according to local radio Wednesday.
A middle-aged woman was killed as she fled her home in Yabucoa, the southeastern town
where the storm's eye first hit the island. Her home's roof was ripped off by
lashing wind and she was hit by the falling metal sheet, said chief of local
emergency service, Jose Villegas.
On the northern coast in Vega Baja, an elderly man died as he fell off from
the roof while trying to put up storm shutters.
The storm led to the suspension of air traffic and navigation in the
region, including tourist cruise ships, stranding thousandsof tourists. Power
was knocked off and roads were turned into waist-deep rivers by torrential
rains.
Jeanne is the 10th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.In the past
two weeks, the region has seen three major hurricanes,Charley, Frances and the
deadliest Ivan, which killed more than 60in the Caribbean.
A hurricane warning was posted for the eastern coast of the Dominican
Republic and Puerto Rico and a hurricane watch was issued for the southeastern
Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Enditem |
