PNA condemns German minister's statement on security wall

RAMALLAH, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) on Tuesday condemned the statement of German Interior Minister Otto Schily on the security wall and asked for clarification from the German government.

Schily said on Monday that the controversial West Bank barrier the Israel was building had proved its worth because it had led to a drop in attacks on Israel.

His remarks contrast sharply with those of German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, who said the barrier was "barely understandable" from a security point of view.

Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said, "It's a strange attitude of the German minister" especially given that Germany disagrees with Israel on the construction of the wall.

Erekat told "Voice of Palestine" radio that the PNA had presented an official request to Germany for explanation.

He said that the German minister's statement would not have an impact on the attitude of the European Union.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled in July that the Israeli barrier is illegal and should be torn down.  Enditem
