Indonesia calls on UN members to share terrorist info

JAKARTA, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The Indonesian government called on member countries of the United Nations to share information on people suspected to have links to terrorist groups, an Indonesian diplomat has said.

"UN members should cooperate in preventing terrorist acts such as last Thursday's deadly bombing outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta," Indonesia's permanent representative to the UN RezlanIshar Jenie was quoted Tuesday by the official Antara news agency as saying.

"One of the reasons why terrorist attacks are getting out of hand is the lack of information on the background of terrorist suspects," he added.

Rezlan said accurate information from UN member countries on the background and characteristics of suspected terrorists would make it easier to identify them.

"We are ready to take the necessary steps and to cooperate with other countries to ensure the defeat of terrorists," he said.

Last Thursday's bomb attack outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta killed nine people and injured more than 180 others.

The attack followed warnings issued by the United States and Australia the week before to their citizens in Indonesia to stay away from foreign hotels and defer non-essential travel to the country.

"Indonesia has condemned the bomb attack in the strongest possible terms, for we do not want our country to be the target of terrorist acts anymore," he said. Enditem¡¡
