Israel to form witness protection authority
www.chinaview.cn 2004-09-13 04:10:33

JERUSALEM, Sept. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- A committee led by the Israeli Justice Ministry on Sunday recommended forming an authority to protect vital witnesses in dangerous and extraordinary cases, Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported.

According to the report, the authority will provide services trying to hide or change the witnesses' identities, and even give them plastic surgery or move their families overseas.   The authority will also provide physical security to the witnesses who are at high risk, and build a course of action to keep the witnesses from being threatened.

The committee recommended that the authority be independent, but it should be supervised by the Justice Ministry or the Public Security Ministry.

The committee estimates that the authority can be formed within months and the project's budget is estimated at 45 million shekels(10 million US dollars).

The Finance Ministry, which is represented in the committee, rejected the sum stated in the budget, as well as the suggestion to make the committee autonomous.

Its representative to the committee suggested that the police continue to provide all services for the witnesses.  Enditem
