Erekat heads for Cairo to attend Quartet meeting

RAMALLAH, Sept. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat is heading for Cairo to hold talks with Quartet representatives and Egyptian officials, well-informed Palestinian sources said Saturday.

Erekat is scheduled to attend a meeting of the representatives of the Quartet Committee, which groups the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia, in Cairo, the sources said.

The Cairo meeting aims to prepare for a high-level meeting of the Quartet Committee to be held in New York later this month, which will be attended by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and senior officials from the United States, the European Union and Russia.

Erekat noted that his visit to Cairo is related to the cooperation of the Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath with the session of the Quartet Committee and discussions on the developments in the Gaza Strip and West Bank with Quartet representatives and Egyptian officials, according to the sources.

He had earlier announced that the donor countries postponed a meeting scheduled on Sept. 22 in New York upon the request of Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei for more coordination.

Erekat told Voice of Palestine radio that the Quartet Committee knows what Israel is practicing on the ground of "all its escalations of closure, assassinating, besieging Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and the collective punishment."

If the Quartet Committee doesn't form supervision's teams, it means that the Israeli efforts will go on to destroy the peace process and the PNA as well as to reoccupy the West Bank, warned Erekat.  Enditem
