Brunei's prince marries 17-year-old commoner
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei, Sept. 10 (Xinhuanet) --
Newspapers in Brunei on Friday ran full-page coverage of the Bersanding wedding
ceremony of Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and his 17-year-old bride, and
state television broadcast flashback of Thursday's majestic and glittering
ceremony.
News coverage and pictures of the Royal Couple receiving best wishes and
blessings from Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, his wife and other Royal family
members took the front page of the country's major newspapers, filled with pages
of congratulations and best-wishes from governments and major business players.
The Borneo Bulletin also devoted several full pages of photos of the grand
wedding ceremony held at the spacious throne hall of Istana Nurul Iman, which is
inaccessible to Bruneian grass-roots who take the royal residence and government
seat as a dream land.
The Royal Couple, the 30-year-old heir to the throne and his bride Dayangku
Sarah binti Pengiran Salleh Ab Rahaman were presented in the pictures as being
draped in blue traditional attire and adorned with traditional ornaments and
jewelry as they took the center stage, "killing" the films of both local and
foreign photographers busy with recording each detail of the newly-weds.
Under the centuries-old Malay wedding traditions and customs, Thursday's
Bersanding ceremony signaled the official marriage of the Royal Couple.
The sole state-run television in this tiny oil-rich sultanate Radio
Television Brunei (RTB) on Friday continued to beam flashback of the pageant in
both Malay and English languages, running images of the event which was hailed
as a new chapter in the history of the Royal family.
The RTB, which cut off its regular programming Thursday for its exclusive
coverage of the royal show, also devoted considerable period of time to the
Royal Wedding procession following the ceremony as the country continues to be
bathed in joy and happiness and also kind of self-pride for its rich traditions
and customs.
Coming from all walks of life, tens of thousands of spectators Thursday
braved an afternoon tropical downpour to witness what was hailed as a historic
moment to greet the Royal Couple.
Some of them even lined up the streets five hours ahead of the schedule
under scathing sunlight in the morning.
Adding color to the procession were cultural performances at designated
areas along the procession route, with dancers gracefully moving to the
traditional beats of the local music accompanied by live playing of traditional
musical instrument including the "gulingtangan".
Three grand fireworks displays are set to light up the skies of Bandar Seri
Begawan with the first one to follow the Royal Banquet Friday night at the royal
palace. Enditem |
