JAKARTA, Sept. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Indonesian Police Chief Da'i Bachtiar said
Thursday he suspected that a car bomb was used in attack on the Australian
embassy earlier in the day.
"Based on our analysis, the attack resembles the Oct. 12, 2002 Bali bombing and the (last) Aug. 5 Marriot Hotel bombing that usedcar bomb. We have collected the car wrecks. But
whether or not it involved suicide bomber will need further investigation," he
told a press conference here.
He said at least four people, all are locals, were killed in the explosion
that took place at 10:30 local time in front of the embassy compound. But local
media reports said at least nine people have been confirmed dead and the toll
will probably soar asbody parts were found anywhere near the embassy.
Bachtiar said he had met Australian Ambassador David Ritchie who told him
that no Australian staff was among the casualties.
But Anton Sujarwo, an Indonesian working as security guard withthe embassy,
was killed by the attack.
"Terrorism is an extraordinary and indiscriminative crime. Despite the
Australian embassy being targeted, the four dead are Indonesians," Bachtiar
said. He didn't say which group is possibly behind the attack.
But on the occasion he expressed regret that the police so far had made
unsuccessful efforts in arresting most wanted terrorists Noordin Moh Top and
Azahari, both are Malaysian nationals whom police believed to have played key
role in the Bali and Marriott bombings.
Bachtiar, 30 minutes before the explosion told parliament members that
national security is under control ahead of the Sept.20 presidential election,
said that it is very difficult to detectand anticipate a car bomb attack, a
problem also facing all security officers in the world.
More than 100 people are being treated at three hospitals. Manyof the
victims are motorists and motorcyclists passing by the scene when the blast
occurred. Health Minister Ahmad Sujudi said he had ordered all hospitals to
unconditionally receive and treat the bomb victims.
"The Ministry of Health will cover all the expenses," he made ashort remark
to reporters.
President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who was on her way home from Brunei, is
scheduled to visit the MMC Hospital in Central Jakarta where most of the victims
are being treated.
Separately, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said the attack will not
disturb bilateral relations with Australia.
"Indonesia and Australia have established solid cooperation in combating
terrorism, as shown by joint work in handling the Bali and Marriott bombings.
Terrorism is our common enemy," he said.
Wirajuda also said that the attack was directed to the Australian embassy,
located in the Kuningan area, one of Jakarta'sbusiest business centers.
The Kuningan is a place for several foreign embassies, supermarkets,
apartments and hotels and also is a major residential complex of many foreigners
working in Jakarta. In August last year, a suicide bomber launched a car bomb
attack on Marriott, also at the Kuningan area, that left 12 people dead. Enditem
