Mortar attack kills two US soldiers near Baghdad

    BAGHDAD, Sept. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- A mortar attack killed two US soldiers and wounded 16 others on Sunday night near Baghdad, the US military said.

    "Two 13th Corps Support Command soldiers are dead and 16 are injured as the result of a mortar attack on a multi-national forcebase near Baghdad around 6 pm (1400 GMT)," a US military statement said.

    One wounded soldier was in serious condition, the statement added.

    The death toll brought to 981 the number of soldiers killed in Iraq, including at least 732 killed in action, since the start ofthe US-led war on Iraq in March 2003, according to the official Pentagon tally. Enditem
