Israeli border police ready for evacuating settlers
www.chinaview.cn 2004-09-05 20:00:55

JERUSALEM, Sept. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The Israeli border police has started preparations for the evacuation of settlers under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan, Israel Radio reported Sunday.

As part of the preparations, the police decided last week to recruit 20 additional reservist companies to assist the existing border police force, which has been designated to evacuate settlers from the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank.

Berti Ohayun, head of the police operations, has been appointed as head of the evacuation team, while Uri Bar-Lev, head of the police intelligence, has been assigned to plan the border police's operations beyond the Green Line drawn in 1967.

The preparations include plans to deal with public disturbances, violence, and threats to public figures, policemen and soldiers during the evacuation period.

On Aug. 24, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said the border police will evacuate Gaza settlers under the auspices of the army.

He suggested that it be done all at once, rather than in stages, as planned by Sharon.  Enditem
