HAVANA, Sept. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Cuban President Fidel Castro received Thursday at this capital's Jose Marti International Airport the second and final group of the Olympic delegation representing the country at the Olympic Games of Athens 2004.
After saluting at the foot of the stairs the 134 newly arrived athletes from the Greek capital, Castro highlighted the performance of the delegation which won 27 medals (nine gold, seven silver and 11 bronze) to end 11th among 202 participating countries.
He particularly underscored the five medals obtained by the boxers, the third victory of the baseball team, the Olympic record of Osleidys Menendez and the bronze medal obtained by the women's volleyball team.
The Cuban leader, in criticizing the commercialization of sports, said Cuba has never participated in a competition with lent borrowed or purchased athletes, and added that out of the 24 positive doping-cases, none was Cuban.
"History will talk of the Cuban sports, not for what we have done, but for what remains to be done," he pointed out.
The first group of 103 athletes of the Cuban delegation competing in Athens 2004, returned to Havana last week. Enditem |
