Israeli FM warns Syria not to support terrorism

JERUSALEM, Sept. 2 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom on Thursday warned Syria not to support terrorism, saying otherwise the country may face "clear results".

"When Syria is responsible (for terror attacks), it must of course understand that there are some quite clear results," Shalom told Army Radio before leaving for the Netherlands for talks with EU foreign ministers.

"Syria is involved in terror all the time. Syria is responsible for acts of terrorism and granting patronage for terror," he said, adding that Israel believes " those organizations receive direct orders from their headquarters in Damascus."

Responding to a question whether there will be military action against targets in Syria, he said Israel has not rushed to attack Syrian targets in the past and it is a matter of principle.

"When that (attack) is done, it will be done in our opinion after Syria has crossed the red line," he added.

Israel has been blaming Damascus for supporting terror and sources from the government said that a senior Hamas official, whois now living in Damascus and wanted by the United States, is the one behind Tuesday's twin suicide bombings in Israel's southern city of Beersheva, which killed 16 and wounded around 100.

Israel has provided the United States with "concrete evidence" of Syrian involvement in the bombings, sources said.

Less than a year ago, the Israeli Air Force attacked Palestinian targets in Syria in response to a deadly bombing at a popular seaside restaurant in Haifa.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said on Wednesday that "a large portion of the terrorism in the territories" comes from Hamas headquarters in Damascus and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

"You cannot separate what happened in Beersheva from what isgoing on in Lebanon," he added.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon also blamed the Beersheva bombingson Hamas headquarters in Damascus, as Israel Defense Forces Chiefof Staff Moshe Ya'alon threatened unspecified reprisals.

"Anyone who is responsible for terrorism against us should notsleep soundly," said Ya'alon.

"We will deal with all those who support terror," he said, singling out Lebanon, Syria and Iran for possible links with "terror organizations".  Enditem
