KATHMANDU, Sept. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The Nepali government imposed curfew in Kathmandu from 2 p.m. Wednesday amid the furious demonstrations protesting the killing of 12 Nepalese by a militantgroup in Iraq.
The Kathmandu District Administration declared the curfew inside the ring road area and 200 meters outside the ring road from 2 p.m. local time (0813GMT), keeping in view the massive demonstrations and attack on the man-power agency and the government offices by the protesters.
Demonstrators have burnt tires and government offices documentsin the streets since early Wednesday morning.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the agitating crowds in various places. Some are said to be injured.
According to a Xinhua report from Baghdad on Aug. 20, a dozen Nepalese workers were taken hostage in Iraq by a group of Heroic Mujahedeen (Islamic fighters) on the night of Aug. 19-20, accusingthem of assisting the US troops in Iraq.
The killing of the 12 Nepalese nationals was posted in an Islamic website Tuesday afternoon and was later confirmed by the Nepali Foreign Ministry. Enditem |
