Chalabi escapes assassination in Baghdad
www.chinaview.cn 2004-09-01 15:00:52

BAGHDAD, Sept. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Iraqi National Congress leader Ahmad Chalabi escaped an assassination attempt Wednesday when gunmen attacked his convoy, wounding two of his bodyguards, Dubai-based al-Arabiya reported.

The convoy was attacked at about 7:30 a.m. (0330 GMT) in Latifiya town, south of Baghdad, when Chalabi was returning from the holy city of Najaf, Chalabi's aide Haider al-Mussawi told al-Arabiya.

Chalabi escaped unharmed but two of his bodyguards were wounded, one of whom seriously, Mussawi said.

Chalabi, once a Pentagon ally who fell out with Washington later, came back to Iraq from Iran earlier this month to face counterfeiting charges.

A warrant issued by an Iraqi court accused him of counterfeiting old Iraqi dinars, which were out of circulation in this January. Chalabi strongly denied the allegation.

Chalabi's nephew Salem Chalabi, who heads the special tribunal to try former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, faces charges of murder, which were also denied by Salem.  Enditem
