One bomb explodes, one detonated in Buenos Aires
www.chinaview.cn 2004-09-01 10:38:04

BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- A small homemade pamphlet bomb exploded earlier Tuesday in a bank, and another was detonated outside a local McDonald's causing no injuries, police said.

After the explosion, pamphlets spread around the bank protesting against the payment of the Argentine foreign debt and abrief visit by International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Spaniard Rodrigo Rato on Tuesday.

Rato's seven-hour visit follows Argentina's decision to temporarily suspend its 13-billion-dollar loan program with the IMF and its economic reform requirements.

A person with the name Dario Santillan Commando on the pamphlets claimed responsibility for the attack. But police said the identification was unknown yet.

Many Argentines, who once enjoyed one of South America's highest standards of living, still blame the IMF for leading to a defaulted debt and currency devaluation in Argentina.

The demonstrators, a mix of leftists and the jobless, have staged near-daily protests, road blockades and sit-ins at government offices.

Argentina's relations with the IMF have become strained since the country's economy imploded in 2001. Enditem
