KABUL, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet)-- Another "friendly fire" by the US military in Afghanistan claimed the lives of six more civilians inthe war-weary nation Monday night, an official confirmed Tuesday.
"As a result of erroneous bombardment by US military in Manogi district of Kunar province six civilians were killed last night and nine others injured," the police chief of Kunar Matiullah KhanRahmani told Xinhua.
However, the locals put the casualties as high as seven. Several houses were also destroyed in the raid, according to eyewitnesses.
The incident occurred at midnight in Weradish village when the US aircraft raided a suspected hideout of the remnants of the former fundamentalist Taliban regime who were involved in conducting anti-government activities in the region.
In the meantime, dozens of the armed militias of the ousted regime raided the US-led coalition base with mortar, rocket and small arms in the troubled Kunar province along the border with Pakistan, a US military statement said here.
"During the fighting, insurgents fired indiscriminately at villagers. The coalition medically evacuated seven children, one coalition soldier and two Afghan soldiers," the statement issued today confirmed.
According to the statement an insurgent blew himself up with a grenade injuring the children.
"The coalition evacuated the injured to Bagram Airfield medicalfacility for treatment. Four of the injured are currently undergoing surgery at Bagram," noted the statement.
In another "mistake" last week three civilians including two women and a child were killed in southern Ghazni province when theUS soldiers opened fire on their car at a check point.
The US military busy hunting down the remnants of Taliban and al-Qaeda networks have been occasionally committing the "friendly fire" in the post-Taliban nation over the past nearly three years.
In the worst of its kind two years ago in southern Urozgan province 48 civilians were killed and over 100 others injured whenthe US aircraft mistakenly bombed a wedding party on the suspicionof Taliban's gathering.
The mountainous south, east and southeast Afghanistan where theremnants of former Taliban regime is believed to have hidden has been the scene of spiraling insurgency for the last eight months in which possibly hundreds had been killed. Enditem |
